Domain Names
Q. What is a domain name?
A. Domain names are the human-readable addresses used on the Internet (eg, "www.artsnet.org"). When an internet user requests a domain name in their Web browser, the Domain Name Service translates these names into IP addresses, which the internet utilizes to direct the request to the server that actually hosts the Web site.
Q. What is a domain registrar?
A. Domain registrars are companies that handle the official registration of domain names (eg, "www.artsnet.org"). Most often, a domain registrar is the company that you pay to be allowed to continue to use a domain name.
Q. Why doesn’t CAMT register domains?
A. We don’t provide domain names nor are we a domain name registrar. We are not registered through the appropriate organization to sell domain names.
CAMT Hosting
Q. What type of server do you run for this service?
A. Windows 2003 Server running IIS 6.0.
Q. Do you allow database development, MySQL databases, SQL databases, SSL, Cron, AJAX, Pearl, C, C++, Python, PHP, or CGI?
A. No. If your organization needs any of these features, CAMT hosting is not the solution for you. There are many, many other hosting vendors that can support these services.
Q. What web software can we use? Do you offer any?
A. CAMT will only provide FTP login access to your Web site root folder. You can use any FTP or Web development software that you choose, but CAMT has no recommendations and does not provide any software or Web site administration control panel.
Email
Q. So, you don’t host email. Why not?
A. We do not host email because the level of resources (both human and technical) to run and maintain a super-efficient email server is beyond what CAMT can dedicate to this low cost service.
Q. But we still need email. How do we get it?
A. Just because CAMT hosts your Web site www.forexample.com doesn’t mean you can’t still use name@forexample.com as your email address. If you are interested in getting new email or keeping your current email addresses, we will be happy to assist with that. You will need to purchase an email hosting package from a vendor. There are some email hosts that offer five (5) email addresses for 99 cents per month when you purchase them for the year, so your annual total would only be about $12. A few email hosts that CAMT clients have used in the past are Google Gmail, 1 and 1, Dotster, and Network Solutions.
